Top 10 Must-Haves for Summer Fashion
Curated by Aline Toler, stylist and image consultant
Ready or not, summer is here, and it’s my favorite season! I even named my little girl, Summer, who brings me joy and sunshine throughout the year. This summer’s fashion evokes those same feelings of blissful fun in the sun and balances new trends with old ones making a comeback.
So, here they are – my top 10 must-haves to help you embrace the season in style and narrow your focus as you transition to your summer wardrobe. I have a feeling this might be your best-looking summer yet…
Tie-dye has been a famously hippie print, until now… This year, tie-dye is one of the most searched fashion keywords. The new summer tie-dyes are very modern and chic in more sophisticated monochromatic colors. This refresh on an old trend adds an elevated and fashion forward look. Keep your eyes open for shades of blue – the color of both the sky and the ocean can have an immediate calming effect.

2. Animal Prints
You might ask: Why is it still so popular? The reason: Animal print is a statement all by itself, making any outfit look bold and daring. Safari-style animal print, for example, is set to bring a wild side to this vacation season’s hottest looks. Python print has also been a hit lately, and is a great print to incorporate into summer swimwear.

3. Belted Pants and Shorts
This high-waisted style is preferred in a light-weight fabric for the summer, but denim is always great, too. I got my first pair of belted, slouchy trousers in linen fabric, which keeps me cool in warm weather. This elegant and sophisticated style pairs well with other trends like crop tops. The fabric belt is key – tie it in a knot or bow and you’ve got a polished look that isn’t too fussy for the relaxed days of summer.

4. High-Waisted Bikinis
Summer is the perfect time to spend your days on a breezy beach under blue skies. Kick off the season wearing a stand-out style with a high-waisted bikini, which promises comfort and sleek style. High-waisted swimwear is flattering on women of all ages and body shapes. I love that it also gives petite girls like me the illusion of an elongated body. Everybody wins!

5. Crochet and Natural Materials
The beauty of crochet is the femininity that it adds to any outfit. It’s a light, breezy look for summer and extremely versatile. Whether it’s a crochet purse, shoes, maxi dress or a crochet-trimmed swimsuit, this handmade detail has been everywhere lately. This updated trend is perfect for warm weather and adds both texture and a natural element to any outfit. Rattan, yarn, straw or bamboo – make these wardrobe staples during summertime.

6. Linen Fabric
With soaring temperatures throughout the summer, it’s time for us to adjust our fabric choices. This lightweight fabric helps achieve that natural, nonchalant look. A style that lends itself perfectly to both off-duty and workwear, linen looks just as good on skirts and baggy shorts, as it does on more form-fitting pieces – a perfect investment for this hot season!

7. Shell Accessories
The playfully nostalgic seashell jewelry trend swept over the accessories market and social influencers. Ever since, the fashion industry has been obsessed with the look. From statement earrings to hair accessories, ‘90s-era puka shells are coming back to life in modernized and dainty jewelry styles just in time for summer.

8. Clear Acrylic/PVC Accessories
From high-end brands to fast fashion, clear bags, shoes and accessories are getting a lot of attention this season. Transparent PVC provides a barely-there versatile twist to any shoe, and is an edgy, effortless look to add to your summer closet. Clear accessories, such as belts and handbags, are a great way to make a statement, and as an added bonus, it forces you to keep your purse clean and organized!

There are many ways to define this shade, but yellow is a hot color for Summer 2019. Whether it’s called marigold, canary, daffodil, mustard, sunlight or lemon, all these shades of yellow will be popping up everywhere. The color is a bold choice – an eye-catcher, a statement-maker, a head-turner – and I encourage you to find the shade that best complements your skin tone and rock it!

Polka dots are another hot trend this season. They’re a fun design element that pairs wonderfully with summer garments. To make this trend a little less predictable, choose more earthy colors. You can still do the classic navy, red or black look, but the trendy shades are maroon and more neutral tones.
